Dominant Color
Dominant Color is a free browser tool that lets you compute the average color of any image. The image is decoded onto an HTML canvas in your browser and re-encoded there, so the picture is processed on your own device rather than uploaded. It is used most by sellers preparing product photos that must meet a marketplace's size rules. Colour profiles are kept as the browser reads them — extreme wide-gamut originals may shift slightly. Nothing is gated: no signup wall, no trial period, no upgrade prompt.
Key features
- Colour profiles are kept as the browser reads them — extreme wide-gamut originals may shift slightly.
- EXIF orientation is respected, so photos from a phone do not come out rotated.
- Works on desktop, tablet and phone — no separate app to install.
- No ads interrupting the tool itself, and no upsell before the result.
How to use Dominant Color
- Choose an image: Drop a picture onto the area above, or tap to pick one from your device or camera roll.
- Adjust the settings: Set the size, quality or format you need. The preview shows what you will get.
- Save it: Download the finished image — the original on your device is left untouched.
Frequently asked questions
- Is there a size limit? — Only what your device can hold in memory. Ordinary camera photos are instant; very large panoramas may take a few seconds.
- Does Dominant Color strip location data from my photos? — Re-encoding drops most EXIF metadata, including GPS coordinates — useful if you are about to post the picture publicly.
- Will transparency survive? — Yes for PNG and WebP output. Saving as JPG has no transparency channel, so transparent areas become solid.
- Which image formats does Dominant Color accept? — JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and — in current browsers — AVIF. HEIC from an iPhone usually needs converting first.
